Our upgrade solution for ULEZ & Clean Air Zone Compliance

Comply with confidence: Discover how our upgrade solution empowers you to navigate Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ), Low Emission Zones (LEZ) and Clean Air Zones (CAZ) effortlessly.

The HJS SCR emission upgrade involves adding an additional catalyst to the exhaust and an AdBlue system to the vehicle, resulting in the complete exhaust aftertreatment system being identical to what is present on a euro 6 diesel vehicle. The system operates independently from the vehicle’s original electronic systems and is normally installed within one day.

There are various funding schemes available throughout the UK including the Transport for London (TFL) scrappage scheme which typically cover a large percentage of the retrofit cost. The scheme supports small businesses registered in London (under 50 employees). All London-based sole traders and small businesses can scrap or retrofit up to 3 vehicles. The scrappage scheme application process is a simple online form that can be found on the Transport for London website.

Vehicle owners will need to upload evidence to prove their identity and eligibility. To check for eligibility for funding you can check the Transport for London (TFL) website. ULEZ van and minibus scrappage scheme – Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)

HJS retrofits are governed by the Energy Savings Trust (EST) under a scheme called the Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS). The scheme certifies that all retrofit technologies meet UK Government standards. This UK wide certification scheme ensures that the correct levels of pollution reduction are achieved and that retrofits are tested and approved by CVRAS are providing compliance with all UK emission zones.

Upon completion of the retrofit upgrade, an installation certificate is provided to the vehicle owner and HJS submits the details to the Energy Savings Trust (EST) who are responsible for updating the ANPR camera database to show the vehicle as being compliant.

About HJS UK

HJS Emission Technology was founded in 1976 with its headquarters based in Menden, Central Germany. HJS employs approximately 450 people who are engaged in the development, production and marketing of modular exhaust systems for reducing emissions fpr all road, rail, construction and marine applications.

HJS teamed up with Daimler and Johnson Matthey to combine a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system with a NOx reduction system. Known and patented as Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology (SCRT) this modular system can almost completely remove Nitrogen Dioxides from the diesel exhaust and be applied to a wide range of diesel powered applications.

Our business in the UK is supported by our dedicated sales, project management and technical teams operating from our facility in Swindon, Wiltshire. From this facility, our engineering team provide national installation and technical support.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will the newly installed system effect my fuel economy?
The HJS SCR system is designed to be as a fuel economy neutral as possible and the majority of customers will not notice any change in fuel economy.
Will I have to alter my V5 log book and notify DVLA?
No, the log book remains unchanged and DVLA do not need to be informed. Following installation, an installation certificate is issued to the customer and the details are then submitted to the Energy Savings Trust who control the CVRAS scheme. The authorities that control the number plate cameras in each city are then notified and the number plate cameras are updated to show the vehicle as ULEZ compliant.
How long does installation take?

Installation is normally completed within 1 day, in some more complex cases this can take slightly longer.

Where is the AdBlue tank located?
This is either chassis mounted or in some cases is mounted behind the front bumper. Our team can advise you further before the installation takes place.
How often do I have to refill with AdBlue?
A display is installed inside the vehicle which will indicate the level of AdBlue remaining and the quantity of AdBlue consumed will depend on the type of mileage driven ie urban vs motorway driving.
Am I entitled to government funding?

If you are a small business located within the London ULEZ, you can apply for retrofit funding through the Transport for London (TFL) website (subject to meeting the criteria). Further information can be found here:

How long will my funding application take?
Once an application is submitted to TfL they are normally processed within a couple of weeks.
If I’m successful with my funding application, when will I receive my payment?
Upon completion of a successful application, TfL will issue you a confirmation letter advising the amount of funding you have qualified for. Upon completion of system installation and presenting the required evidence to TfL they will reimburse you which normally takes around a week.
How does certification work?
Following the installation, an installation certificate is issued to the customer and the details are then submitted to the Energy Savings Trust who control the CVRAS scheme. The authorities that control the number plate cameras in each city are then notified and the number plate cameras are updated to show the vehicle as ULEZ compliant.
